Almighty Allah (SWT) draws our attention to something very, very important in verses 2 and 3 of Surah Talaaq (chapter 65 of the Holy Quran):

وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا

2. “And whoever is careful of (his duty to) Allah, He will make for him an outlet.”

3. “And He provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine. And if any one puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) for him. For Allah will surely accomplish his purpose: verily, for all things has Allah appointed a due proportion.”

In verse 2, Almighty Allah explains that He provides a solution or a way out for someone who has Taqwa (God conscious), when he/she is faced with a challenging situation. Then, verse 3 explains that the result of Taqwa is that Allah (SWT) provides for such people from a source which he/she cannot fathom where it comes from.

Almighty Allah (SWT) brings forth another very important issue in the second part of verse 3, that he opens the path for people with Taqwa, after establishing a guarantee in the first part of verse 3.

The second part of verse 3 says that whoever puts his/her trust in Almighty Allah (SWT) will be sufficient for such person, and indeed Allah (SWT) carries through with His commands, and He has ordained a measure for everything.

This is a very important and thoughtful message, referring to 2 very important qualities, namely Taqwa (God consciousness) and Tawakkul (trust in Allah (SWT)). What these verses reaffirm is that nothing can come in the way of someone if he/she has these 2 very important qualities.

There is a Hadith from our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), where he asked from angel Jibra’eel about what Tawakkul is (trust in Allah (SWT)). Angel Jibra’eel explained that Tawakkul is to know that creation does not harm nor does it help, nor does it reward or forbid.

Tawakkul is basically reaching to the point where you lose all the hope and expectation in people. When a servant of Almighty Allah (SWT) reaches this point, then his/her actions are purely for Allah (SWT). Such a person does not hope or expect anything except from Allah (SWT). Such a person also does not fear or have greed for anything, other than Allah (SWT). This is how Angel Jibra’eel explained Tawakkul to be (trust in Allah (SWT)).

When a person reaches to this point where he/she does not have any fear other than from Allah (SWT). Such a person has unequivocal conviction that nobody can harm or benefit him/her. This brings a completely new personality to the abd (servant) of Almighty Allah (SWT). This person is a different person, and looks at various phenomena in life very differently, and also interacts with various situations and challenges very differently.

There is also a Hadith Qudsi narrated from the night of Me’raj, the heavenly ascension, where our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) asked Almighty Allah (SWT) what is the best of deeds? Almighty Allah (SWT) responded that there is nothing better in His court than the trust in Him and be content with what He has ordained.

A person has a completely different approach to life when he/she reaches this point, where he/she is happy with whatever Almighty Allah (SWT) has decreed and still completely submits to Almighty Allah (SWT). Almighty Allah (SWT) is sufficient for the people that reach this level. Nothing else matters to them. They do not fear anything and they do not need anybody.

The 2 verses from the Holy Quran cited above are saying that having Taqwa and Tawakkul results in one never feeling stuck and helpless. You are never in a situation which you cannot get out of. A door will always open for you.

Very interesting to note is that Taqwa is for today’s life. You need sustenance, which Allah (SWT) guarantees if you have Taqwa. Tawakkul is for the future. Now, when you have both Taqwa and Tawakkul, then Almighty Allah (SWT) is sufficient for you.

The last part of verse 3 gives us the confidence of Allah (SWT) giving everything in this world according to its due proportion. Now, when one reflects on the situation in this world, we would apparently find different role players, with resources under the control of certain powers, etc.

Not quite, because when someone reaches the level of Tawakkul and trust in Allah (SWT), he reflects on the scenario very differently. Such a person reflects on the situation as being all in the hands of Almighty Allah (SWT), even if we see that some people have the lion’s share of resources in their hands. This is not necessarily the true picture, because there is a secret behind this.

The last point in this verse is very important, because Tawakkul and trust in Allah (SWT) does not mean that submission and depending on Almighty Allah (SWT) absolves one of the responsibilities to do anything! It does not translate to laziness or the suspension of our responsibility. Quite the contrary!

Indeed, we have to submit to Almighty Allah (SWT) and have our full trust in Him, but we also have to follow the system of Allah (SWT), as risq comes from Him through this system. We have to strive and struggle, remembering that at the end of the day, everything is in the hands of Almighty Allah (SWT).

When the Holy Quran speaks about Tawakkul, it is very important to note that Tawakkul is presented as a major point of reliance for the believers in the face of challenges. An example is after the Battle of Uhud, where the situation was very bad when the Muslims lost. This was a particularly desperate situation, the hopes were down and everything was going horribly wrong for the Muslims in this battle.

The Holy Quran says that those who have Imaan in such a difficult situation emerge with increased faith due to their complete trust and reliance in Almighty Allah (SWT). There are various verses to cite in this regard.

An example is verse 173 of Surah aal-Imraan (chapter 3):

الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

“Those to whom the people said: Surely men have gathered against you, therefore fear them, but this increased their faith, and they said: Allah is sufficient for us and most excellent is the Protector.”

Another example is verse 122 of Surah aal-Imraan:

إِذْ هَمَّتْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ تَفْشَلَا وَاللَّهُ وَلِيُّهُمَا ۗ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

“When two parties from among you had determined that they should show cowardice, and Allah was the guardian of them both, and in Allah should the believers trust.”

Another example is verse 12 of Surah Ibrahim (chapter 14 of the Holy Quran):

وَمَا لَنَا أَلَّا نَتَوَكَّلَ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَقَدْ هَدَانَا سُبُلَنَا ۚ وَلَنَصْبِرَنَّ عَلَىٰ مَا آذَيْتُمُونَا ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ

“And what reason have we that we should not rely on Allah? And He has indeed guided us in our ways; and certainly we would bear with patience your persecution of us; and on Allah should the reliant rely.”

So, no matter how much pain, humiliation and torture is inflicted upon us, the point of reliance for people of Imaan is Tawakkul and trust in Almighty Allah (SWT). This changes the approach and calculation, namely, when you have this level of Taqwa and Tawakkul.

Once again, I remind you and myself about Taqwa of Almighty Allah (SWT), and with this Taqwa and Tawakkul, you reach a point where you really fear none but Allah (SWT). You reach this point, where you really see nothing other than the power of Almighty Allah (SWT). You reach this point, where He is sufficient, not only as a slogan on the tongue, but in real practical life.

You see this thread of Tawakkul and Taqwa flourishing, in the face of the greatest challenges and threats!

We have all seen in the news and on social media over the past week, that the Japanese Prime Minister conveyed a message from the head of the so-called biggest power politically and militarily (USA) to the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran. How did the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei respond?

The beautiful part is that it is recorded, and everybody can see in the video clip, how content and fearless this man is when he responds to the Japanese Prime Minister by saying “I do not see Trump worthy of any message exchange, and I do not have any reply for him, now or in the future.”

So, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is saying that someone who is believed by this whole world to be the most worthy and most powerful person (Trump), is not worthy of a message exchange!

This is what happens when you have full faith and Tawakkul in Almighty Allah (SWT). You see the likes of Trump to be the most worthless and weakest person! As the Holy Quran explains, the weakest amongst the houses is the dwelling of a spider! This trust, confidence and self-respect comes purely from trust in Almighty Allah (SWT).

Then, when the message was relayed that USA is keen to talk sincerely, Ayatollah Khamenei responds by saying that sincerity does not suit them! Then, when another message is also relayed that there is no intent for regime change in Iran, we see that Ayatollah Khamenei responds by saying that he is not worried about that, and also reiterates that USA is not sincere, because if they could change, they would have done so long ago.

The reality is that USA cannot bring about regime change in Iran. It is not in their hands to change! USA thinks that this man, with his full faith and trust in Almighty Allah (SWT), is thirsty to hold onto his regime!!!

Then, on the issue of nuclear weapons, Ayatollah Khamenei responds with the greatest of dignity by saying that nobody can tell Iran whether it should or should not have nuclear weapons. But he goes further to reconfirm that Iran will not produce nuclear weapons, because Islam does not allow anyone to have weapons of mass destruction.

This is really amazing manifestation of confidence, respect and dignity of our leadership. It is only a leader who has Tawakkul in Almighty Allah (SWT) who is able to speak fearlessly and courageously.

Millions of people’s lives are at risk. The whole country is on edge. This is how mere mortals like us think and do our calculations and analysis on this basis. However, someone who unequivocally believes in that infinite power does not see this risk, because he is connected with the source, beyond all of the distracting powers in this world.

Therefore, with all their accusations, we now also see that they are trying to create a baseless story of Iran being responsible for the explosion of oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. There are, of course, people who are naturally trying to create a war in the region, so that they can satisfy their ulterior motives.

We know very well what they are trying to do, but we keep reminding ourselves of verse 54 of Surah aal-Imraan (chapter 3 of the Holy Quran):

وَمَكَرُوا وَمَكَرَ اللَّهُ ۖ وَاللَّهُ خَيْرُ الْمَاكِرِينَ

“And they planned and Allah (also) planned, and Allah is the best of planners.”

This is really something to reflect on. This is historic, for generations to come. How people come to that status of Tawakkul and submission to Almighty Allah (SWT). May Allah (SWT) protect the supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei and prolong his life to continue with this courage, confidence and visionary leadership of this Ummah, Insha Allah.

I would also like to draw your attention to a very serious issue in our society, and that is the killing spree which is going on in our city of Cape Town. Sometimes, we hear reports of more than 14 people killed in less than 24 hours, ranging from gang violence, to taxi violence, and a whole host of other motives.

Human life has reached the point where it has absolutely no value, and no respect. Unfortunately, police are also to a certain extent victims of this violence.

This brings such a deep pain, when one sees young people in our society being victims of this social evil of gangsterism and drugs, and how they have absolutely no respect of life and end up losing theirs too.

Unfortunately, the system does not address the crux of the issue, and unfortunately, in our province, the norm is to provide everything for the privileged areas and let the other people die! This does not seem to bother the conscience of those in authority. This is a very worrying situation, and quite frankly, heart-breaking to see how people are killed, with absolutely no regard for human life.

May Almighty Allah (SWT) help us in this dire situation in our province, to address this challenge head-on.
