It is with deep sadness that the Ahlulbait Foundation of South Africa received the news of the passing away of a great scholar, jurist, thinker, and Mujahid, Ayatullah Sayyid Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi.

Born in a house where his father was a distinguished scholar in the revered seminary of Najaf-Ashraf, Ayatollah Shahroudi studied under Grand Ayatollah Khoei initially, and then flourished under the guidance of the luminous Shaheed Ayatollah Baqir Sadr.

He was the living legacy of Shaheed Sadr, not only collecting the lectures of Shaheed Sadr and compiling his books, but also in the socio-political arena of resistance in Iraq. He was instrumental in ensuring that the contemporary thinking of Shaheed Sadr in fields of theology, philosophy, economics, jurisprudence, ethics and politics were known and presented them to the world.

He then continued to serve the ideals of Islam, and performed various critical functions in the Islamic Republic, and brought his keen academic insight into applying the principles of Islam to contemporary society.

Indeed, in the last two decades of his life he was a committed and loyal companion of the leadership of the Islamic Revolution.

Through his passing, Islamic scholars and institutions have lost a patron. we make dua that his legacy, and that of his teacher, Shaheed Sadr is kept alive in all the institutions he served, and the ideals which we aspired to.

With an outstanding record of service to people of Iran and Iraq and to the Muslim Ummah at large, AFOSA extends its sincere condolences to the leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatullah Khamenei and his esteemed family.

May Almighty Allah reward him abundantly for his services and receive him into His Infinite Mercy Insha’Allah.
